How to Pronounce the Letter "F"

The "f" sound is the voiceless version of the "v" sound. This means that you use the same tools and formation but you do not feel a vibration in your throat area or larynx.

Just like the "v" sound, the "f" sound is made by using your upper teeth on your lower lip. You should feel your upper teeth lightly touching your lower lip, as if you were trying to bite your lower lip. With this formation, you slowly blow air through your mouth. The "f" sound is made by a continuous exhalation or a blowing of air.

Things you should remember:

1) Keep your upper teeth lightly biting your lower lip.
2) Make the "f" sound by blowing air through your mouth and through your upper teeth and lower lip formation.
3) You should not vibrate your larynx or throat area, because the"f" sound is a voiceless sound.

Here are some words you can practice with.

  1. This is actually useful information. I'm Hispanic and throughout the years had issues properly pronouncing the letter "F". This was frustrated as many English speaking people would ask me to repeat myself when saying Florida, as in the state. I searched the internet about properly pronouncing the letter F and came to this site...and I'm glad I did.
